Below are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions:

IS INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL OPEN FOR SOUTH AFRICA?

Yes! International air travel is allowed at the following airports: OR Tambo International Airport, King Shaka International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, Lanseria International Airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. Long-haul flight departures and landings are permitted during the hours of curfew.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER SOUTH AFRICA?

All international travellers arriving at the airports must provide a valid certificate of a negative COVID –19 test, recognised by the World Health Organisation, which was obtained not more than 72 hours before the date of travel.

In the event of the traveller’s failure to submit a certificate as proof of a negative COVID -19 test, the traveller will be required to do an antigen test on arrival at his or her own cost and in the event of a traveller testing positive for COVID-19, they will be required to isolate themselves at their own cost, for a period of 10 days.

WHAT ARE THE CURRENT RULES FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S LEVEL 1 LOCKDOWN STRATEGY?

A nationwide curfew from midnight until 04H00. If a flight arrives within the curfew hours, travellers will be able to show proof of their boarding passes or tickets for their flights if stopped by law enforcement en-route to their establishment.

Gatherings are permitted, provided that all health protocols are adhered to. Indoor gatherings may not exceed 50% of a venues capacity, and may allow up to a maximum of 100 people. Outdoor gatherings may allow up to a maximum 250 people.

Wearing of masks is mandatory.

WHAT FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR COVID TESTING? 

Currently available at airports is the National Health Laboratory Service and apply to arriving travellers only.

Cape Town International Airport:

A Mobile testing unit in the pause area in the international arrivals hall at Cape Town International Airport is presently conducting Antigen tests. The tests are intended for arriving travellers only, no tests are done for travellers leaving Cape Town International Airport. The operating hours are from 10h00-18h00 daily and appointments are not required. Approx. cost from ZAR175.00.

King Shaka International Airport:

King Shaka International Airport in Durban has a testing unit. This is a mobile laboratory in a Mercedes van airside in the International Arrivals Hall. The Durban mobile unit performs Antigen tests for passengers entering into South Africa only. Tests for travellers leaving South Africa are not conducted. The mobile testing unit’s operating hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 10h00 until 14h00. Approx. cost from ZAR175.00.

OR Tambo International Airport:

There are three mobile COVID-19 test units in clearly identifiable vans located opposite the InterContinental Hotel, on the lower level of the airport complex. The service is available 24/7 and results are available in 24 to 48 hours. Guests are advised by SMS that their test result and certificate are ready for collection. Tests for travellers leaving South Africa are not conducted. Approx. cost from ZAR 175.00.

Springbok Atlas Tours & Safaris and Private Companies:

There are a myriad of lab facilities available in all major centres.

Ortia has four mobile units and is currently conducting PCR tests for travellers entering and leaving South Africa, at a cost of R600 and with a four-to-six-hour wait for the result.

Next Pathology is licensed by the Department of Health specifically for the diagnostic testing of SARS COV-2 and does issue an official travel certificate. Each airline has their own COVID-19 testing requirements – it is your responsibility to check your airlines requirements before being tested.

Springbok Atlas Tours & Safaris will assist as and when needed for COVID testing and we can arrange for mobile testing companies to meet clients at the hotel to conduct the test. Approx. cost from ZAR 850.00 – ZAR 950.00, with results available in approximately 24 hours. Please confirm with us for further details.
